What Can Diabetics Eat?
Healthy eating is very important for diabetics, as it is a good way in blood sugar control. The following foods are recommended for diabetics:
Beans- they are good sources of potassium, fiber and magnesium. The fiber is good for reducing the feeling of pangs of hunger. ½ a cup of beans provides 1/3 of your body’s daily requirement for fiber. Beans are also rich in proteins, and an ounce of meat is equal to ½ cup of beans in terms of protein content, but beans contains no saturated fats.
Citrus fruit- lemons, oranges, limes and grapefruit are good fruits for diabetics. They are rich in vitamin C and soluble fiber.
Berries- strawberries, blueberries and other kinds of berries contain fiber, antioxidants and vitamins.
Fish- consider taking fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon. Avoid taking deep-fried and breaded fish.
Tomatoes- you can eat them raw, in a sauce or pureed. They are high in vitamin E, iron and vitamin C.
Whole grains- they contain every nutrient a grain as supposed to provide. They offer magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, folate and chromium. Avoid processed grains, as they don’t provide these.
Milk and yoghurt- take milk and yoghurt which is fat-free. They are a good source of vitamin D, and calcium for strong teeth and bones.
Nuts- they are rich in fiber and magnesium. The fiber is good for management of hunger. They also contain healthy fats.
Vegetables- dark and green ones are recommended. They include kale, spinach and collards. They are rich in vitamins and soluble fiber.
Meat and its substitutes- take small amount of meat each day, but avoid the fatty one. Meat is rich in minerals, proteins and vitamins.
Snacks- some snacks are good for diabetics, but others are not. Take home-made popcorn, hummus, almonds and egg-salad.
